Why Work with a Coach?

Coaching boils down to two simple questions: Who are you? What do you want to do? While simple, the reality is that we rarely take the time in our lives or work to pause and reflect on what our answers to these questions are and even less often do we then ask ourselves what we would actually like our answers to be. Over the course of a coaching engagement, a coach ensures you have a north star and holds you accountable to the actions you say you’ll take and the values you stake out.

As a coach we uncover your values, your limiting beliefs, and your dreams then we get clear on what future you want to create. This can include figuring out how to jump to that next level,
solving challenges with coworkers, and uncovering opportunities for what you could do next.

Why do people hire coaches?
A coach is a partner to help you build the life and career that you aspire to have. Coaches help people to push themselves a little harder, get unstuck, define or get a new vision for their lives, have more work/life balance, process difficult situations or relationships, and more. People who hire coaches could be feeling any of those things and more - but they’re not be quite sure what the next step should be and want support and accountability to figure it out and act on it.

What is the difference between coaching and consulting?
You hire a coach to help you define the path that most brings you alive and set goals that help you achieve success. You hire consultant because they have expertise in an area that you do not. In some instances, a coach may step into consulting territory if they have an expertise that could benefit the area you’re working on. This could be seen when a coach does a 360 Review for you and gives you the consolidated areas for growth, or if you’re looking for ideas on how to use coaching skills to grow your team. The primary goal of a coach is to help you recognize the things that are important to you and to take action on making them a reality.

I don’t think I need a coach but someone suggested it for me. Why should I?
Coaching is for people who want to do more than they are doing now, people who want to make a change. If you’re not going to do the work, coaching may not be for you. But if you have that feeling you’re not performing quite as well as you could be, or your life isn’t quite how you want it to be, a coach is a great partner to explore the reasons why and give you accountability to go and make the changes that will get you there.

How long do should I have coaching for? And how often?
Corporate clients sometimes specify 6-12 executive coaching sessions, meeting every 2 or 3 weeks, with each session lasting around an hour. If you are working with some meaty personal and professional goals, 4-6 months is a good period of time to make some progress.

However, this can vary hugely. I coach some clients weekly, and some monthly. I’ve been working with some for over a year, and some for just 2 or 3 sessions. In fact, you can have a coaching ‘moment’ with someone in just a couple minutes if the right questions are asked at the right time.
